AMSI notes with regret that Professor Alf van der Poorten passed away on the morning of Saturday 9th October 2010.

Alf was a dedicated research mathematician, having written some 180 papers, attended many conferences near and far, and been an active member of the mathematics community.

He was president of the Australian Mathematical Society from 1996 to 1998, and was awarded its George Szekeres Medal in recognition of his career research achievements and contribution in 2002. Alf was appointed a Member in the Order of Australia, AM, in the Australia Day Honours List in 2004 for 'service to mathematical research and education, particularly in the field of number theory'.

Garth Gaudry, the first AMSI Director, enjoyed both a professional and non-mathematical relationship with Alf. They had shared interests in the theatre and rugby as well as mathematics and mathematics education.

Jan Thomas, AMSI Executive Officer, was privileged to have worked with Alf on the 1995 Review of mathematical sciences. He was President of the AustMS when she was appointed as the Society's Executive Officer.

Alf's extensive and varied background is detailed on Macquarie University's website.
