Professor John Toland appointed director of the Isaac Newton Institute

Prof. John Toland will head the institute come October

Professor John Toland has been appointed as the next director of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences and NM Rothschild & Sons professor of mathematical sciences.

In October, he will succeed Professor Sir David Wallace, who has been director since October 2006.

Professor Toland has been professor of mathematics at the University of Bath since 1982 and, from 2002 until 2010, he was also scientific director of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh.

His research interests include mathematical analysis and non-linear partial differential equations.

In 1978, he proved the Stokes conjecture – a previously open problem in mathematical hydrodynamics – which dated back to the 19th century.
