This project is in conjunction with a major, multi-disciplinary ARC Linkage Project involving mathematics, physics and financial data analysis. It is located in Mathematics with support from the Departments of Physics, and of Applied Finance and Actuarial Studies at Macquarie University. A PhD scholarship is available to support a project in the areas of dynamical systems, chaotic data analysis and related inverse problems. The aims are analysis of mathematical models underlying semiconductor laser systems, particularly chaotic laser systems, and the development of robust and reliable methods for analysing associated chaotic time series. Whilst particular systems motivate this study, the methods will make contributions to research on time series of financial data from the Sirca Technology databases, also. The project will be independent of major milestones of the ARC Linkage Project in order to allow the candidate to have a self-paced development as a researcher. However, there will be many opportunities for outcomes to be transferred into the major aims of the linkage project, with a beneficial increase in the impact of the PhD research and track record of the successful applicant. The multi-disciplinary nature of the project provides an excellent opportunity for a PhD candidate to be exposed to a team environment while being able to focus on a largely independent project. An excellent candidate will be able to build the research track record for a broad range of careers in mathematical science, including academia.
The living allowance (stipend) in 2013 for full-time MQRES holders is $24,653 tax exempt. An additional one-off top-up of $10,000 (tax exempt) is also payable in the first year of the PhD project. This is a contribution by the industry partner.
