Seminar Abstract:

Many epidemiological studies use a nested case-control (NCC) design to reduce cost while maintaining study power. However, since the sampling was conditional on the primary outcome and matching variables, re-using nested case-control data to analyse a secondary outcome is not straightforward. Recently, several authors have proposed methods that can be used to analyse secondary outcome. I will discuss the currently available methods and further propose a maximum likelihood method that where the likelihood contribution is derived by respecting the original sampling procedure with respect to the primary outcome. Using simulation study and real dataset from a Swedish cohort, we compare the performance of the different methods and assess practical implications of re-using nested case-control data in terms of statistical efficiency.
