The Life of Pi: a Talk for Piday 2013

Speaker's Name:

Prof. Jon Borwein

Speaker's Institution:

The University of Newcastle

Time and Date:

Monday 14 March, 3.14pm (EDT)

Seminar Abstract:

The desire to understand Pi, the challenge, and originally the need, to calculate ever more accurate values of Pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, has captured mathematicians - great and less great - for many many centuries. And, especially recently, Pi has provided compelling examples of computational mathematics.

Pi, uniquely in mathematics, is pervasive in popular culture and the popular imagination. In this lecture I shall intersperse a largely chronological account of Pi's mathematical and numerical status with examples of its ubiquity. It is truly a number for Planet Earth.
